The NIOS Secondary Course is the Class 10 equivalent certification program offered by the National Institute of Open Schooling — a government board under India’s Ministry of Education. When you pass the Secondary Course, you receive a certificate that carries exactly the same legal standing as a CBSE Class 10 pass certificate for all purposes: higher education, employment, government jobs, and further study.
What makes it different from a regular school’s Class 10 is the delivery model. There are no daily classes to attend. No fixed academic year. No uniform, no school roll, no age-group peer pressure. You study from NIOS’s official Self-Instructional Material (SIM) at your own pace — from home, from work, or from anywhere — and appear for board examinations when you are ready.

If you appeared for Class 10 from CBSE, ICSE, or a State Board and failed one or more subjects, you qualify for NIOS Stream 2. You can transfer up to 2 subjects you passed from your previous board via TOC (Transfer of Credit) and appear only in the failed subjects under NIOS. If you have never attended school or have no formal Class 8 certificate, NIOS still accepts you. In this case, you submit a self-certificate confirming you have adequate knowledge for the Class 10 level. There is no formal test for this — the self-certificate is sufficient for enrollment purposes. Verify the current format requirement at sdmis.nios.ac.in at the time of application.
UAE-based Indian students apply as overseas learners through the same online portal. The eligibility criteria are identical. The only differences are the overseas admission fee (higher than domestic India rate — verify at the portal) and that UAE students select an Accredited Institution (AI) from the overseas list. No travel to India is required at any stage.

For Class 10, you select a minimum of 5 and maximum of 7 subjects. At least one must be a language subject. Your choices here also affect which Class 12 stream you can pursue next — plan ahead.
Hindi (201), English (202), Urdu (203), Sanskrit (209), Bengali (214), Telugu (215), Odia (217), Gujarati (225), Punjabi (228), Marathi (222), and other regional languages. For UAE students, English (202) and Hindi (201) are the most commonly selected language subjects.
Planning tip: If you intend to pursue NIOS Class 12 Science (PCM — engineering/JEE path), include Mathematics in Class 10. If you plan Class 12 Science (PCB — medical/NEET path), include Science and Technology. If you plan Class 12 Commerce, include Mathematics or Business Studies. Choosing wrong now means a gap later.

All NIOS Class 10 admissions are done online at sdmis.nios.ac.in. There is no offline form. There is no office to visit.
Use Section 3 above. Stream 1, 2, 3, 4, or Re-admission — confirm before starting.
Visit sdmis.nios.ac.in → select the relevant stream → register as a new learner → verify your mobile via OTP. UAE mobile numbers (+971) are generally accepted. If any issue, use an accessible Indian number for OTP only.
Name, date of birth, address (UAE address for overseas students), contact details. Select your country as UAE. Choose your Accredited Institution (AI — study centre) from the overseas list.
Minimum 5, maximum 7. Stream 2 students — select TOC for subjects already passed from your previous board during this step. This selection is final and cannot be changed after submission. Read the TOC guide before proceeding if you are in Stream 2.
Upload scanned files as per the checklist in Section 7. Keep files clear, correctly oriented, and within the portal’s size limits. Poor-quality uploads are the most common reason for admission delays and rejections.
UAE students are classified as overseas learners and pay a higher fee than domestic students in India. The exact fee for the current session is displayed on the portal at the time of registration. Always verify at sdmis.nios.ac.in before paying — fees are subject to revision each session. Payment accepted via credit card, debit card, UPI, or net banking. The fee is non-refundable once paid.
After verification, download your enrollment number and NIOS ID card. Keep these — the enrollment number is required for every future step including TMA submission, exam registration, admit card, and results. NIOS charges two separate fees — an admission fee (paid once when you register) and an exam fee (paid separately, approximately 2–3 months before each exam cycle, per subject). UAE students are classified as overseas learners and pay a higher admission fee than domestic India students.
Always verify the current admission fee and exam fee at sdmis.nios.ac.in before paying. NIOS reviews and updates the fee structure periodically. The amounts shown on the portal at the time of your registration are the correct, current figures. The admission fee is non-refundable. The exam fee is a separate, additional payment made later.

TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) is NIOS’s internal continuous assessment. For every academic subject you study under Stream 1, there is a set of written assignments you must complete and submit to your Accredited Institution (AI — study centre) before the exam.
TMA booklets are included with your study material. Questions map directly to chapters in your SIM (Self-Instructional Material) textbook. The recommended approach is to complete each TMA question as you finish the corresponding chapter — not all at the end. Submit to your AI by the TMA deadline (typically January 31 for April exams, and around July for October exams — confirm with your AI). Some Class 10 subjects include practical components that must be assessed separately through a hands-on examination at your AI (study centre). For UAE students, this is the one step that requires physical presence at your registered study centre.

If you cannot commit to April or October, ODE lets you choose your own exam date — available almost every month except April, May, October, and November. Admission and exam registration are two separate processes with two separate fees. After admission, you must register for each exam cycle (and pay the exam fee per subject) during the exam registration window — typically 2–3 months before the exam date. Missing the exam registration window means you cannot appear in that cycle.

Yes, absolutely. NIOS has no upper age limit. The only minimum age requirement is 14 years as on 31 July of the admission year. Workers in their 30s, 40s, and older apply every admission cycle across India and from UAE. Age has never been a barrier to NIOS Secondary Course enrollment, and your age does not appear on the certificate in any way.
No. If you passed some subjects in CBSE Class 10, you can transfer up to 2 of those passed subjects into your NIOS record via the Transfer of Credit (TOC) facility — available under Stream 2. You can register for as few as one subject per exam cycle. However, you need to pass a minimum of 5 subjects (including at least one language) to receive the Class 10 certificate. Appearing in one subject at a time is a valid strategy — passed subjects carry forward within the 5-year window. The certificate says “National Institute of Open Schooling” and lists your subjects, marks, and passing year. It does not mention whether you studied independently, via ODE, or through Stream 1 or 2. There is no separate marking that distinguishes open schooling from regular schooling on the face of the certificate. Passed subjects from TOC also appear as normal subjects — no “transfer” label is visible on the certificate.
You can reappear for the failed subject in the next exam cycle — either the following public exam (April or October) or via ODE. The subjects you passed are fully retained; you never re-sit a subject you already cleared. You have up to 9 attempts within the 5-year enrollment validity window.
