You log in to sdmis.nios.ac.in to download your hall ticket. The portal says “Hall Ticket Not Available” — or the download button simply does not appear. Exams are in days. Panic sets in. Before anything else: this happens to hundreds of students every exam cycle, and several of the causes are fixable right now. The most common reason is a missed or failed exam fee payment. But there are others — TMA not uploaded, portal delay, data mismatch — and each has a different fix. This guide walks through every reason your NIOS October hall ticket is not generating, what you can do about each one, and what your options are if the exam fee window has genuinely closed.

There is no single cause. Before assuming the worst, work through this list — your issue is almost certainly one of these:
The most common reason by far. Admission fee and exam fee are two completely separate payments in NIOS. Many students pay the admission fee, receive their enrollment number, and assume they are registered for the exam. They are not. The exam fee must be paid separately, during the exam registration window that opens approximately 2–3 months before the October exam cycle. If you missed this payment, your hall ticket will not generate.
Sometimes the payment goes through on your card or UPI but does not reflect on the NIOS portal — due to gateway delays, session timeouts, or processing failures. Your bank account shows the deduction but the portal shows unpaid. This is fixable. See Section 3 for the immediate action steps.
For Stream 1 students, TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) submission is mandatory before you can appear in the public exam. If TMA was not submitted and uploaded on the portal, the system blocks hall ticket generation. Stream 2, 3, and 4 students are TMA exempt — this reason does not apply to them. Hall tickets are released in batches. If you paid correctly and submitted TMA, but the portal still shows “Hall Ticket Not Available” — it may simply not be your batch yet. Check the official NIOS website for the confirmed hall ticket release date. Wait 24 hours after the announced release date before escalating.

Paying the exam fee is part of a multi-step process — you must also complete the exam registration form on the portal, select subjects, choose the exam centre, and submit. Some students pay the fee but do not complete the form submission. If the registration form was not submitted, the hall ticket will not generate even if payment was made.
The distinction between admission fee and exam fee catches more students off guard than any other NIOS administrative issue.
For the October/November public exam cycle, the exam fee window typically opens approximately 3–4 months before the exam and closes around 6–8 weeks before the exam start date. After the window closes, late fee options may be available for a short additional period — but once that too closes, the exam registration for that cycle is shut. Silent payment failures are more common than most students realise. The transaction leaves your account but the portal records it as failed or pending. In this case: take a screenshot of your bank statement or UPI confirmation, note the transaction reference number, and contact NIOS’s helpline (1800-180-9393) or submit a grievance through the portal with the payment proof. NIOS does resolve these cases — but time is critical.
Work through these in order. Do not skip ahead.
✅ Step 1 — Log in and check your student dashboard
Go to sdmis.nios.ac.in → Student Login → enter enrollment number and password. Look at your exam registration status. Is the exam fee shown as “Paid” or “Pending”? This tells you immediately which category your problem falls into.
✅ Step 2 — Check payment status in your bank or UPI app
Open your bank statement, UPI app (PhonePe, GPay, etc.), or credit card statement. Is there a deduction around the date you attempted to pay the exam fee? If yes but portal shows pending — it is a silent failure. If no deduction — payment was never completed.
✅ Step 3 — Check if the exam fee window is still open
Go to nios.ac.in → Notifications → Examination and check if the exam fee submission window is still active. If it is — pay immediately. Do not delay. If it is closed — go to Section 6 for your options.
✅ Step 4 — Submit a grievance or contact NIOS helpline
If payment was made but not reflecting: call 1800-180-9393 (Toll Free) with your enrollment number and transaction reference. Submit a written grievance through the student portal with your bank payment screenshot attached. Document everything — date, time, call reference number.
✅ Step 5 — Check TMA status (Stream 1 students only)
Log in → go to TMA section → check if TMA for all your subjects shows as “Submitted” and “Uploaded.” If any subject shows TMA not submitted, your hall ticket will be blocked for that subject. Contact your AI (study centre) urgently. See how to check TMA marks in NIOS.
✅ Step 6 — Check for pending e-service requests
If you submitted any name/subject/date of birth correction through e-services, check its status. A pending correction can hold your hall ticket. See what are e-services in NIOS to locate and check pending requests.
Sometimes the problem is not your fee or TMA — it is the portal itself. NIOS’s student portal handles very high traffic around exam registration and hall ticket release periods, and technical issues do occur.
Wait 24 hours after the announced release date. NIOS releases hall tickets in batches — not all students get access simultaneously. If it has been more than 48 hours after the confirmed release date and you have paid the exam fee correctly, call the helpline with your enrollment number.
Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) and clear cache and cookies before logging in again. The NIOS portal works best on desktop/laptop — if you are on mobile, switch to a computer. If the button still does not appear, check all the reasons in Section 1 before assuming a portal bug.
This is a common PDF rendering issue. Download using Google Chrome → right-click → Save As → open with Adobe Acrobat Reader (not the browser’s built-in PDF viewer). If it opens correctly in Acrobat, print directly. If the PDF is genuinely corrupted, log out, clear browser cache, log back in and re-download.
Use the “Forgot Password” option on sdmis.nios.ac.in. Your enrollment number is your username. If the registered mobile number has changed since admission, contact your AI (study centre) or NIOS regional centre — they can assist with credential recovery. Do not create a new account; it will not be linked to your existing enrollment.
This section applies only to Stream 1 students. Streams 2, 3, and 4 are completely TMA exempt — skip this section if you enrolled under Stream 2 or ODE.
For Stream 1 students, TMA submission is a prerequisite for hall ticket generation. If TMA for one or more of your subjects has not been marked as “Submitted” on the portal, those subjects will be blocked. Your hall ticket either will not generate at all, or will generate without those subjects — meaning you cannot appear for them in this cycle.

If the October exam fee payment window has officially closed and you cannot pay even with a late fee, you cannot appear in the October/November public exam cycle this year. That is the hard reality. But it does not mean waiting until April. Here are your actual options, ranked by how quickly each gets you to an exam:
ODE is available almost every month except April, May, October, and November. If the October public exam window has closed, the ODE is available from December onwards. You choose your exam date, study at your pace for that subject, and appear when ready. Results come approximately 45–55 days after the exam. If you missed the exam fee for multiple subjects but the window is still partially open, you can pay for and appear in only the subjects you are most prepared for. Four possible reasons even after fee payment: the payment went through on your end but failed to register on the portal (silent failure — submit a grievance with payment proof), TMA is not submitted for one or more subjects (Stream 1 only), a pending e-service correction is holding your record, or the hall ticket has not yet been released in your batch. Check each of these in order using the checklist in Section 3 before assuming a problem that needs escalation.
The admission fee is a one-time payment made when you first register on sdmis.nios.ac.in — it gives you your enrollment number and activates your NIOS student account. The exam fee is a separate per-subject payment made before each exam cycle (approximately 2–3 months before April/May and October/November exams). Paying the admission fee does not register you for any exam. Both are separate payments, and missing the exam fee means no hall ticket for that cycle.
NIOS typically offers a late fee window for a short period after the regular exam fee deadline — but this is not guaranteed every cycle. Whether a late fee window is currently open depends on where you are in the calendar relative to the exam dates. Check the current status at nios.ac.in under Notifications → Examination. Do not show up at a different centre assuming you will be allowed in. Immediately log in to sdmis.nios.ac.in → e-services → request an exam centre change. This request must be submitted within the change window — contact your AI or NIOS Regional Centre the same day you notice the error. If you missed October, you have two paths: NIOS On-Demand Exam (ODE) which runs almost every month except April, May, October, and November — so December is your next available month via ODE — or the April/May 2027 public exam cycle, with exam fee window opening around November 2026. No. A printed hall ticket is a mandatory document for entry into the NIOS exam hall. The invigilator checks your hall ticket and photo ID before allowing you to sit. A digital copy on your phone is generally not accepted as a substitute for the printed version — always carry a physical printout. If your hall ticket generates very close to the exam, print it immediately at any print shop and carry it along with a valid government-issued photo ID.
Missing one exam cycle does not cancel your NIOS enrollment. Your enrollment remains valid for the full 5-year window and you can appear in any subsequent cycle — public exam or ODE — for the subjects you still need to clear. Subjects you have already passed are permanently credited to your record. You have up to 9 attempts across the 5-year period. One missed cycle is a delay, not a loss. A missed exam fee payment or a blocked hall ticket feels like a catastrophe at the moment it happens. In practice, it is an administrative problem with clear solutions — most of which you can work through in a few hours. Run the checklist in Section 3 first. Call the helpline with your transaction reference if you paid but it is not reflecting. Contact your AI about TMA status if you are in Stream 1.
